As Sonam Kapoor’s Neerja releases, people are anticipating to see the real life story of a brave heart that saved 359 people from a hijacked plane. However, some people are unconvinced as previous films based on real life incidents like Akshay Kumar’s Airlift and Ranveer Singh-Deepika Padukone’s Bajirao Mastani haven’t highlighted many important facts. These two films have been criticised post release, so will Neerja also face the same opposition and criticism?
No, they won’t. You may be wondering how can two huge films faces criticism, while this one won’t. But, we have a PERFECT answer. The makers of Airlift and Bajirao Mastani made their films based on reports and research and not based on accounts of real people. On the other hand, the makers of Neerja have involved Neerja Bhanot’s family during the making process. They first bought the rights of the film, researched about the air hostess’ life with the help of her family, researched about the whole incident on the Pan Am flight 73 with the help of eye witness accounts, made a concrete script, ran it through the family and then started work. So now there is no scope left for the film to be criticised or opposed.
Producer Atul Kasbekar mentioned to us in an EXCLUSIVE interview, “I cannot tell you how grateful I am by the way Akhil and Aneesh Bhanot, Neerja‘s brothers have handled this. I don’t think people in my own family will give me this much trust and faith, the way they did. They were like, ‘Yaar, tu kar de apni picture (Friend, you make your film). Don’t worry.’ Contractually, we had it written that the family would come and read the script and sign it off, which they did but there was nothing like ye change karo (change this). There was an incredible trust and faith between both ends and that gives us an incredible amount of responsibility to make sure we did not let them down.”
The makers also wanted to show the film to the family, but the family decided to see the first show after it released. As Atul revealed to us, “They (the family) haven’t seen it. They want to see it with their whole family, so they will see the first show on February 19. Sonam also hasn’t seen it yet. She will also see it soon as she has been busy promoting the film.”
